Fridays

Earlier today, a wet city abstract.

First it was pouring, then it was sunny, then it was pouring again and now it's sunny again.  The weather in New York is wackadoo and as luck would have it, I was stuck outdoors when the sky was exploding with rain, first huddling underneath a cheap umbrella under a leaky awning on my way to the subway, and then racing home from school pushing the baby in the stroller.  I'm hoping the weekend is a little drier or at least that I'm cozy inside while it's coming down.  I hope you have a lovely weekend and here are some fun links from around the web.

Did you know that October is Architecture and Design month in NYC?  It's Archtober! There are so many cool events going on around town.

Famous people with cameras? My new favorite inspiration board on pinterest!

JFK and Jackie in a photobooth.

Valentino at the ballet.

Every single image on Hedi Slimane Diary inspires me.

What your Instagram filter of choice says about you.

I would like everything on this list.

Five new cameras from Leica.  swwwoooooon.

Do you have a pup? Here's some dog design.

Speaking of recipes...this soup!

If I was in Paris tonight I'd go to this.

Fall!

Vermont

Fall is here! Just kidding. It's still way too hot in New York for me to even imagine a change in seasons. But seriously, when is it going to get cooler?  When autumn finally does arrive, I'm thinking about maybe taking a little trip to New England to show the baby the foliage, breath in some cool northeastern air and maybe visit my old college town (one of the best places ever).  In the meantime, I found this photo on my archive from a trip we took up to Vermont exactly five years ago and it's getting me really excited!

By the way, today is the last day to enter the La Sardina camera giveaway!  A winner will be selected at random tonight! Also, here are some tips for photographing landscapes in case this picture got you inspired.

When you go fishing through your archives

Copyright Monica L. Shulman

You never know what you'll find when you start digging through old boxes, or in my case, old external hard drives. I've been completely re-hauling my system so there's been a lot of extra backing up going on and I came across these photos from our trip to Thailand in January 2008.  For one reason or another these photos never made it to the editing phase but I like them so much.  We visited an elephant preservation center while we were in Chiang Mai and fell in love with these majestic, noble animals.  Their eyes were so warm and they seemed so content at home at the camp.  Spending time there was such an amazing experience.

And, ps, have you signed up for this giveaway yet?  It's a free camera, folks!

Instagram Weekend

Monica L. Shulman - Instagram

We ushered in the first day of fall with a little boat ride on the Long Island Sound. The weather was glorious, our cousins taught us how to fish and I even made it for a full hour without feeling sea sick.  I'm hopeful that this week is just as fun and successful.  Here's a look via Instagram.

And ps, don't forget to sign up for this cool camera giveaway!

Fridays

Another photo taken with my La Sardina camera from lomography last weekend in Brooklyn.

This weekend we're heading out to the country again to relax in the fresh air, spend some time with family, visit the beach and maybe pick some pumpkins.  No matter what I'm sure it will be magical and fun.  I hope you have a great weekend and here are some fun links from around the web.

I'm giving away a free camera from Lomography!

I'm SO excited that one of my favorite photos is going to be in an exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography.

This fashion editorial by the dynamic duo Jamie Beck and Kelly Framel is just beyond words.  Prepare to have your mind blown.  And this prelude shot on film is stunning!

This DIY is crazy good.

Shooting a wedding on an iPhone!

An iconic photo (and a personal favorite) turns 80.

I'm obsessed with this video.  It is gorgeous and dreamy and so urban and chic.  Any frame could be a still photograph.  I love it.

I would absolutely stay in an igloo.

Surreal paintings of man and nature.

This polaroid galleryDreamy.

It's Harvest time.

These photos of Iceland make me want to jump on the next plane.  Like now.

Vogue's most iconic models.  Little story: I saw Christy Turlington on the street in my neighborhood once with Ed Burns and their kids and I nearly fainted.  She is the most beautiful woman I have ever, ever seen.

I've been busy pinning portraits lately.

Giveaway: Win an awesome camera from lomography.com

Win a La Sardina Camera on my blog this week!

I started taking photos when I was just a kid and my first cameras were a polaroid that my mom used for her work and a purple Le Clic camera (remember those?).  My dad and I developed our own film in our family basement and I've been hooked ever since.  These days I shoot mostly digital but shooting film and trying different cameras are the roots of my photography passion.  So when lomography.com contacted me to test out one of their awesome analogue cameras the clear answer was "obviously!"

You probably know about my love for the Instagram app (ok, I'm obsessed) but a digital filter, while definitely fun, is nothing like the real thing and waiting for your film to develop and seeing the results in your hands for the first time.

The lomography shop has so many cameras to choose from and I went with La Sardina.  They have a bunch of really cool options (stripes, color blocking, patterns!) but I loved the DIY version that I can dress-up on my own.  For such a tiny, plastic camera, La Sardina has some pretty amazing features.  I LOVE that it comes with a wide-angle, you can shoot multiple exposures, and it has a bulb setting.  Plus it has a powerful flash with an awesome name: Fritz the Blitz! The small book that comes with the camera has some great tips and shows incredible photos taken with the camera.  I need more practice with mine and I can't wait to experiment more.  Just waiting to get my film back was so exciting.  Remember the anticipation?!  I really miss the spirit of film and never really knowing what you were going to get...especially with a plastic, toy camera!

So, the folks at Lomography are generously giving away a La Sardina DIY camera to one of my readers!

Here's how to enter:

1.  Leave a comment below AND visit the Lomography site here to registerEasy!

2.  You can also get an extra entry by tweeting about the giveaway with a link to my blog.

So what are you waiting for?  Good luck!

Postcards from Miami

Copyright Monica L. Shulman

Our recent trip down to south Florida was the perfect mix of beach, relaxation and fun.  Wonderfully quiet and peaceful days relaxing in the sun mixed with a couple of nights out on the town proved to be the best recipe for an amazing end-of-summer vacation.  A holiday in Miami never disappoints.

By the way, you can also check out these tips for taking better photos on vacation and also how to create a narrative with your pictures!
