A Journey to the Land of Smiles

Remember I mentioned to you that I'd be blogging twice a month over at the
VodoModo blog? Well, here's a post that was published over there earlier this month. Enjoy!

My name is Monica Shulman and I'm a professional photographer based out of New York City. I'm so excited to be a part of the VodoModo team and to be blogging here twice a month!

This week I found myself really inspired by fellow VodoModo-er, Felice Bassuk, when she wrote about her trip to Thailand. Felice blogged about her experience as a volunteer at an elephant nature camp in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand and it reminded me of the trip that my husband and I took to Thailand in January, 2008. We also visited an elephant camp while we were in Chiang Mai and it really was a life-changing experience. Elephants are so fascinating and majestic and despite their size, they really are so gentle and look at you in an almost human way. We were planning on taking a ride but I was terrified of falling - nothing my husband or the guide said to me to help me relax worked. We walked down a wooden walkway where the animal waited patiently for us to step up and sit in the tiny seat on its back. I hesitated and suddenly the elephant turned its giant head toward me and as he opened and closed his eyes he batted his lashes and I honestly felt at that moment like he was smiling at me and sensed my anxiety. I started to pet his course skin and he wagged his trunk and batted his lashes again. I suddenly felt so calm that the feelings of stress and nervousness that came just before seemed so silly. I climbed right up and suddenly felt so safe with my new pal.

We returned from our nearly three week journey to Thailand and Cambodia with so many wonderful memories and stories such as this one. Since I'm a photographer by trade, it's clearly easier for me to express myself through images rather than through words. Here are some of my favorite photographs from this magical trip.

Laina Briedis

I came across photographer Laina Briedis' work on Booooooom - a daily visit of mine. Looking at her photos makes me miss film so much. I love the grain in each of the images but I think it's really the composition of her subjects and the hidden stories that they tell that I'm most drawn to. They are like small mysteries waited to be solved. I clicked around and discovered that this tremendously talented woman also has an Etsy shop. Also visit her
Flickr page.

Summer is Here...Officially!

It has been hot, hot, hot for a while now in New York City but today summer has officially arrived! Of course I feel like I'm melting no matter what the temperature is but today is the summer solstice...the longest day of the year and the first official day of summer.

I am so looking forward to this summer. So far it's been pretty fabulous - the weather, being with friends, going to the beach, long (albeit slow) walks with my husband - and it's only going to get better once our girl arrives. Of course I know we'll be tired (exhausted) but at least it will be warm and at least we'll have New York and our beautiful new daughter to entertain us.

Here are some images of New York that I took during many previous summers. I simply cannot wait to show this amazing city and world to our baby girl....soon!

It's Winter Somewhere

In the winter, I long for summer. And in the summer...well, I don't exactly wish it was winter but at nine months pregnant, in the city with weather that won't quit, I just close my eyes and imagine a cold wind on my face.

I only have 11 days until my due date and last night, while my husband watched the Lakers I scrolled through my archives on my computer and found these photographs that I shot, while pregnant, in the dead of last winter at the beach in East Hampton. It was indeed freezing but I loved it. We were the only people there and the only sounds were the small, crashing waves and soft sound of the snow blowing on the surface of the wet sand.

Now it's summer and I'm so excited to enjoy the warm weather with my girl when she finally arrives. But, in the meantime, it's definitely winter somewhere.

The Magical World of Cig Harvey, Photographer

I first came across photographer Cig Harvey's work when I attended a group show featuring her work last summer at the Robin Rice Gallery here in New York. I just love how conceptual her work is and it was a real treat to see it in person. I spent some time studying her images online and that's when I really fell in love. I love the boldness of the colors in her images and the dream-like quality that they have. But, my favorite thing about her work is the stories that the images seem to tell - I love when photographers create images that seem to tell a very clear tale yet also allow you to invent your own stories. It's no surprise that she calls brands like Kate Spade and publications like New York Magazine and Bazaar clients.

Don't you agree? Check out some of these images from her
website and

Black and White Patterns in Nature

Going through my archives once again before a massive, pre-baby back-up I found these photos that I took in the Hamptons last summer and fall.

Remember I shared some last week? Well, here they are (and some new ones) in black and white. I love these abstract patterns created in nature.
