Spies Hide Out in Every Corner

It started raining while we were driving back to the city. It was quiet except for that sound that tires make when they rush across the wet pavement. I started to think about the city, all the people, how much I love it, and suddenly the quiet was like an alarm in my ears.

I thought about this enormous city and it was reduced to just a few lights, a wet windshield and a steady hum on the road on the way in. Sometimes I look out the window in my living room and I wonder about all the specs of light coming from the buildings. We're all on top of each other - thousands of people on one block and we're all just small lights. We're not that different from each other.

The Blur

"I've never walked in any other city as much as I have in New York. The eyes are filled with images and my legs are constantly moving."

Street Stories

We have a photograph of a person walking through the snow in Soho in downtown Manhattan taken through a window at Dean and Deluca with this quote printed directly beneath it. The figure is blurred - anonymous like so many New Yorkers. Anonymous like I am when I'm out making my way through my day out in the city. So many people are like that. We seem to be just a blur, a tiny spot, in this enormous place just trying to make our way.

This morning I was out running an errand and I stood up to the curb ready for the light to change along with about 50 other people. 50 people on my side of the avenue and 50 on the other. And everyone was like a blur...a collection of people waiting to get some where making a blur. I'm always wondering about that blur and the singular pieces that make it up. When the light changed and we all converged it was like organized chaos. Everyone walking into each other but looking past each other in a way that almost seemed choreographed. I thought of my tiny self as part of this big whole.

Pound the Surf.

We had a pretty amazing weekend out at the beach with friends. It wasn't exactly beach weather but we did spend a lot of time outdoors. I have to load my images but in the meantime I'm looking through my archives and sharing images that I've never posted before...for one reason or another.

I recently backed up my computer and I learned that there are over 12,000 images on my external hard drive. Most of them, like these, have never been shared...I suppose it's better late than never. These are from a weekend on Ditch Plains in Montauk back in August when Hurricane Bill was pounding the east coast. Swimming wasn't permitted on the beach but these guys somehow managed to make it out there.

Face to Face. In a Dry and Waterless Place.

I've finally had the time this week to process the images from our holiday out on long island last month. They are all part of a new project that I'm working on that I might be talking about here in the future.

In the meantime, I'm so inspired after going to the U2 concert at Giants Stadium last night. It was a total nightmare getting there and getting home but the incredible performance by the band more than made up for it. I've never been to a higher energy show in my life. And, it's amazing when you go to to a show and you know every single word in every single song. Try to imagine what it sounds like to hear 80,000 people sing the words to "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" - I have the goosebumps right now just thinking about it. They also played The Unforgettable Fire - my all-time favorite U2 song and probably one of my top 3 favorite songs of all time. When they played it I was back in my old room on my bed just daydreaming and listening to the CD on my little stereo. Their music inspires me so much.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, or even if you're new to it you might have noticed that I am constantly moved and inspired by the ocean. To me it's a living, breathing organism. It is moody and volatile...one minute it is calm, the next it is raging mad. I can sit and stare at it for hours. I love the greens, blues and browns contrasted against the steely grays and stark whites. Sometimes I feel like the moods of the ocean reflect my own. The sounds are like lullabies to me.

These were all taken within a few days of each other at the beach. We're going back there this weekend...I wonder what I will find.

No Line on the Horizon

I was born. To be with you. In this space and time. After that. And ever after. I haven't had a clue. This foolishness can leave a heart black and blue.

I was born. I was born to sing for you. I didn't have a choice but to lift you up
and sing whatever song you wanted me to. I give you back my voice from the womb.
My first cry, it was a joyful noise.

...These images make me think of the lyrics from this song. I have been wanting to post them for a while since I took them earlier this summer in East Hampton. We were driving to no place in particular, listening to music, holding hands. It was a melancholy afternoon. The fog was oppressive and there was a slight mist in the air that seemed to gently kiss your skin. The two things were a bit conflicting. The fog felt suffocating and the mist was so welcome and cool that it was almost like a breath of fresh air. It was a bit depressing but hopeful at the same time. Like at any moment the fog would break and the rain would pour in bringing the place back to life.

We're going to see U2 at the Meadowlands tonight. I don't think I have ever been this excited about a concert ever. As a treat, Muse is opening up for them. I can hardly stand it. It is going to be AMAZING.

Because I Like the Details.

I photograph everything. I like the small, seemingly inconsequential things. The parts of the whole.

On some days at the beach this summer the fog was so melancholy and almost foreboding. It sort of matched the hard splashes that the waves made as they crashed against the shore. On other days it was hopeful because the people came out to enjoy the warm weather and the sand in their toes despite the "bad" weather. I like the beach at any time...when it's cold and rainy, when it's foggy and a little sad, when the sun is blazing and SPF 50 doesn't seem to be enough. I like the details of each one of those days.
