The Fall of the Berlin Wall in my Memory and in Pictures

It's amazing to think that earlier this week the world celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I remember that I was sitting in the den at my aunt and uncle's house with my family as we all watched the news. It was an unforgettable moment and I remember the feeling that something incredible and historic was happening. I also remember wondering what my mother and my aunt, sisters and Cuban refugees who fled Communist Cuba with their family when she was just young girls, were thinking. I remember looking over at them and feeling fascinated. I never even asked them...I felt like it was so private that I didn't want to or need to know.

There have been some amazing photos around the web this week marking the events. Here are some of the images that I've found to be most moving and evocative. I definitely recommend visiting each of these sites to see more...especially the then and now series over at Boston.com

Thanks for visitng my website. Twenty years ago It was my first quarter as a new professor here at Ohio University. I was also working on my PhD. At the time, I was so busy with my academic career, that I probably didn't take much time to think about current events. It was a great event. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

These are all beautiful. I remember when the wall came down when I was young. My uncle went down to Berlin from Sweden and brought me back a fragment of the wall. I still have it in my bedroom. It's so weird when I look at it to think of what it really is and what it means...
